The Torbay Local Authority

Working in partnership with schools and other educational providers and centres, Torbay aims to provide a high quality education for the learners in Torbay. Torbay as the Local Authority (LA) has three distinct but overlapping roles:
The core role of guaranteeing the infrastructure of a universal school system in Torbay. This ensures that:
   (a) Every child has a school place
   (b) Children with special needs receive appropriate education and support
   (c) Changes in the school population are planned for
   (d) Children entitled to free school travel receive it
   (e) Large school building projects can be managed and funded
The elected structure of the Council gives the LA the authority to lead the local education community. To set a vision for education. To bring different partners together to achieve change and improvement.
The school improvement role whereby Torbay provides support to heads, governors and teachers but also monitors and challenges schools performance.
